James Smith Obituary

James W. Smith Jr. passed away on February 25, 2026, at the age of 81 in Molino, Florida. Born on February 23, 1945, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he left behind a legacy marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and commitment to his community.

James is survived by his wife of 48 years, Floretta Smith; his children Gary Smith, Bob Phillips and his wife Di, Annette Shuman and her husband Greg, Kathy Meyer and her husband Clay; along with 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs Rosie, Sandy, and Emma, numerous nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of extended family.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Christine Herman; his sisters, Leslie Baker and Judy Ellis; and his parents, James W. and Virginia Smith.

James served a distinguished 26 years in the military. He served for 8 years in the Air Force and 18 years in the Army. He earned a military award for marksmanship. His steadfast commitment and valor were a testament to his character and patriotism.

Following his military service, James transitioned to civilian careers. He was an electrical engineer, spending 14 years with Phillips Office Supply in Carlisle, PA, and he spent several years as a truck driver with Kuhn.  

James was affiliated with the Church of God in Landisburg, PA, he was active in the church choir, sharing his love for music and fellowship.

An avid sportsman and outdoorsman, James participated in bowling and dart leagues, enjoyed horseshoes, fishing, and playing cards. He loved engaging in sports, traveling, and attending family reunions which were highlighted by his spirited presence.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date, where family, friends, and colleagues will gather to honor his memory.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or a local animal shelter.
