Dr. Rolando T. Abangan, passed away on February 27, 2026, at the age of 87 in Pensacola, Florida. Born on June 29, 1938, in Cebu City, Philippines, he embarked on a path that would lead him to significant contributions in both the military and medical fields.
Rolando served valiantly as a neurosurgeon in the U.S. Navy, based in Guam during the Vietnam War, a role that demanded both courage and leadership.
Following his military career, Dr. Abangan dedicated 25 years as a neurosurgeon before assuming the role of Medical Director at East Mississippi State Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. His commitment to the medical field was profound, impacting countless lives through his expertise and compassionate care.
He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, where he found spiritual solace and community.
He leaves behind his wife of 22 years, Sonia Escay Abangan, his daughters Ligaya Abangan, Tala Woods, Alexandra Abangan, Anna Rose Abangan, and stepdaughters Shaina Lemon and Sherrin Gotschall. He was also a cherished grandfather to Webley, Aaron, Zoey, Ariya, and Olivia.
A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery.
