Obituary of Haydon Young Grubbs, Jr.

Haydon Young Grubbs, Jr., age 93, of Shalimar, Florida  passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

He was born in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma on March 16, 1931.  He graduated from The United States Military Academy in West Point, New York in 1953.

He became a pilot for The Army Air Corp and then joined The US Air Force as a test pilot.  He then left the military and joined NASA's Space Program as a NASA Scientist-Engineer.  The highlight of his NASA career was being greeted by the NASA director, Dr. Wernher Von Braun, considered the Father of Space Travel, as he emerged out of the Lunex II in 1966.  Haydon was the Bioastronautics Chief of NASA.  He and Michael Vaccaro were confined as Astronauts for 18 days in a very small vehicle.  The experiment was simulated as if they had landed on the moon.  The scientific, physiologic and geologic data gathered enabled NASA to design an efficiant vehicle "Moon Rover" for the moon.

Haydon is survived by his son, Haydon Young; daughter, Kimberly Grubbs; niece, Pam Grobley; nephew, Dr. John Grubbs and special dear friend Karen Jackson.
