Obituary of Shirley Louise Schmid

Shirley Louise Schmid (neé Biddle), 82, of Milton, Florida, passed away on March 4th 2025. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Henry Scott Schmid, Jr., her daughters Melissa Hughes and Joanne Evanich, her grandsons Daniel Hughes and Robin Hughes, her sons-in-law Jonathan Hughes and Mark Evanich, her brother-in-law Michael Schmid and his wife Michelle Rusin. Shirley grew up in Merchantville, New Jersey. She was active in the Methodist Church there and was an avid reader, graduating from Merchantville High School in 1960.

Shirley graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in 1963 and received her B.S in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967. While attending school at the University of Pennsylvania she taught courses in nursing.  She worked at Morton Plant Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, where she met her husband and later gave birth to her first daughter.  Shirley married Henry Schmid in 1971, and they gave birth to two daughters, eventually settling in Milton, Florida where they lived for the rest of her life. She spent most of that time as a homemaker and wife, actively volunteering in her daughters' schools and activities.

Shirley was an avid reader who was fascinated by fairy tales and stories of lands far away. She enjoyed watching musicals and loved “making a joyful noise” though she didn’t think she sang well. She also loved to travel, and did so to many places in the United States such as Alaska and Hawaii. She also travelled overseas to England, France and Italy, and later to her dream location in Egypt where she sailed down the Nile and even rode a camel.

Shirley raised her two daughters and helped raise her two grandsons and was active in the Gulf Coast Stitchery Guild where she helped to teach people needlecraft and made many beautiful pieces as gifts or to display around her home.
