Sarah “Ann” Williams Hancy
Sarah “Ann” Williams Hancy, age 72, a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and a great friend to many, passed away peacefully the morning of Friday, March 11, 2022, in Gulf Breeze, FL.
Ann was born in Grove Hill, AL, on March 27, 1949, to Lewis Harris Williams III and Sarah Ruth Williams (Richardson). She was a graduate of Leroy High School, Leroy, AL, and valedictorian at Auburn University with a major in Biological Sciences. She went on to become the first woman pharmaceutical representative in Northwest Florida and South Alabama with the CIBA Corporation. She married Steve Hancy on September 3, 1977, after meeting on a ski club trip in Zermatt, Switzerland earlier that year.
Ann was a devoted wife and caring mother. She was deeply involved in her children’s lives, always team mom and spending countless weekends traveling for sports. Ann enjoyed snow skiing, sailing, crafting, gardening, quilting, genealogy research and spending time with her family and large group of friends. In support of her husband, she became an avid sailor, skippering races at the Pensacola Yacht Club and Pensacola Beach Yacht Club. The family spent several summers sailing around the Caribbean from the western edge of Belize to the Bahamas. Most winters were spent snow skiing with family and friends. In 2005, they moved to Tierra Verde (St. Petersburg) where Ann developed great long-term friendships within the Tierra Verde Women’s Club. Shortly after moving, Ann and Steve spent a year cruising from Canada through Maine to Florida and were joined by many friends along the way. In 2017, they moved back to Gulf Breeze to be closer to family.
Ann is survived by her husband of 45 years, Stephen Foster Hancy Jr.; her children, Stephen Foster Hancy III (Julie) and Geoffrey Lewis Hancy (Anna); her grandchildren, Foster (15), Anniston (14), Henley (12), Brooks (10), Lydia (8), and Sophie Mei (4); her sisters, Harriet Downey and Susan Townes and her brother, Nick Williams; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express our thanks to the staff of the Arbors and Emerald Coast Hospice, especially Amanda, for the care they provided during the last months.
There will be a visitation with friends and family at the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 24, 2022, at 10 am followed by a memorial service at 11. In lieu of flowers, please donate, in honor of Ann Hancy, to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or locally to Feeding the Gulf Coast.
