Obituary of joan taylor ryder

Joan Taylor Ryder departed this life on August 15, 2021, in Pensacola, FL, at the age of 88. She was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1932, to Russell Calvin Taylor and Ruth Spears Taylor, in Denver, CO. The family moved to Broomfield, CO, when Joan was about 9 years old. There they had a farm with chickens, ducks and dairy cows. Joan would gather the eggs, much to the disapproval of the rooster, who would peck at her legs. She always ended up winning and gathering the eggs. On Joan's 11th birthday, one of the cows gave birth to a calf that Joan had the honor to name. She called her "Suzy Q". The family, later, moved to Wheatridge, CO, where Joan attended High School. Following graduation, Joan attended Denver University, in the morning and by noon was at work at The Rocky Mountain News. She attended her 1st and only, USO dance and met the love of her life, Glenn Leland Ryder, Jr., in Sept. of 1952, when he was stationed in Denver. They were married 2 months later, at her parents’ home, on November 21, 1952, which also happened to be her parents' 26th wedding anniversary. Joan was never given a middle name, so after she married, she took her maiden name as her middle name. Joan and Glenn's marriage lasted 65 1/2 years, until his death, in 2018. Joan and Glenn lived in Rapid City, SD, Limestone, ME, Denver, CO, Seattle, WA, Minot, ND and settled in St. Louis, MO, for 53 years, before moving to Pensacola, FL, to enjoy the warmer weather. In the early years of marriage, they were blessed with 4 children. The first 3 were born in Denver, CO and the last of their 4, in St. Louis, MO. Joan attended Florissant Junior College, in Florissant, MO, earning her Associates Degree in Library Science. She worked in the library, at Monsanto, for about 6 years. They then relocated to Sydney, Australia, due to Glenn's job, in June, 1984, for 26 months. During their home leave, in 1985, they traveled around the world from Sydney to Sydney. Returning to the states, Joan worked for LDS Social Services, for a few years, before retiring. Joan and Glenn did more traveling, together, following their retirement. They joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint, on Dec. 1, 1956. They were sealed, for time and all eternity, in the Salt Lake Temple, Sept. 15, 1959. Joan and Glenn were both Temple workers, at the St. Louis Temple, for 12 years. The gospel of Jesus Christ was very important to Joan, as was her family. Joan had heart trouble, due to complications from Rheumatic Fever, that she had at 15 years of age, but she didn't let that stop her. Joan was a good cook, baker and seamstress. She had a green thumb and loved her plants, both indoor and out. She loved gardening and always raised beautiful tomatoes, as well as other vegetables. Joan took up cake decorating and decorated many cakes for different occasions and entering some in cake decorating contests, just for fun, but winning 2nd and 3rd place. Joan loved making Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls for her grandchildren and children in her ward, at church. She also loved doing Genealogy and researched a lot, on the Ryder and Taylor side. She loved to read, but as her sight diminished, she went to books on tape. Joan is survived by her 4 children, Phillip Alan (Jeri) Ryder, James Glenn (Patricia) Ryder, of Pensacola, FL, Judith Ann Ryder Porritt, of Vineyard, UT and Sharon Joan (Gary) Ryder Spaulding, of Canon City, CO; 13 grandchildren, Jeremy (Jennette) Ryder, Jasmine (Eben) Thayer, Heather Cross, Stephanie (Joshua) Jarman, Stephanie (Chris Hawkins) Ryder, Nichole (David Nelson) Dangerfield, Mike Cross, Daniel (Brittney Humphreys) Spaulding, Jennifer (Nathaniel) Hardman, Nathan (Cheyenne) Spaulding, Jacob (Jessica) Porritt, Andrew and Oscar Ryder; 19 (+1) great grandchildren; Maggie Hawkins, Daniel Cross, Karalyn Jarman, Rayleigh Saucier, Seraphina Ryder, Navy Nelson, Easten Thayer, Andrew Cross, Cooper Dangerfield, Benjamin Jarman, Adalynn Saucier, Skyelar Porritt, Roland Nelson, Madison Dangerfield, Kyler Hardman, Savannah Porritt, Taylor Hardman, Sophia Spaulding, Amelia Jarman, baby Oliver Spaulding and on the way and brother, David (Marit) Taylor and nieces and nephews.
