He was cut from a generation who took great pride in their work and ability to make their own way in the world. He graduated from Baldwin Jr. High and pursued work in the construction industry at the age of 14 to help support his mother and younger brothers. He attended night school to earn his GED and apprenticed as an air condition and refrigeration mechanic, eventually starting his own company in 1972. He was adept in most trades with the capacity to frame a house, plumb an office building or remove a car engine, if necessary. Billy Joe enjoyed a deep love of his country, expecting nothing but freedom of choice and the pursuit of opportunity, unencumbered or censored. Through his hard work and example, he provided greater opportunities for his family to pursue education, athletics, and better career choices. Billy Joe enjoyed motorcycle racing, water skiing, fishing, traveling and work outdoors, no matter the climate. He believed in youth sports as a method of teaching the fundamentals of discipline, civics, and teamwork. He coached and sponsored youth sports teams while providing jobs in the community for many years. He was a Mason and President of the Civitan Club for multiple terms. He was a member of Prattmont Baptist Church in Prattville, AL and later joined Heights Baptist Church while residing in Pensacola. Through the entirety of his life, Billy Joe was a loving husband and completely devoted to his family and close friends, bestowing each with a warm smile, kind word, and genuine interest in their daily pursuits and happiness.
