Dixie Joan Hood, 91, of Pensacola, Florida passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2021. Dixie Joan Hood of Pensacola, Florida, peacefully passed away early Sunday morning, February 7, 2021. She was 91. Dixie was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 23, 1929 to William Raymond and Lucy Alva (Stewart) Oliphant. At the age of one, the family moved to Kentucky where she attended schools in both Scottsville and Bowling Green. After graduating from Allen County High School in 1948, she moved in with her aunt Mary Thelma in Indianapolis and worked as a cut/copy and paste girl at the Indianapolis Star newspaper. She met her future husband Robie Hood, at a fraternity dance where he was attending Lincoln Chiropractic College. They were married in March 1952. After Robie’s graduation, they moved to Montgomery, Alabama and started their family, then moved to Pensacola, Florida and eventually to Milton, Florida. In the 60’s she volunteered for Santa Rosa Counties Civil Defense and was a member of the Jayceettes. She and our father were very social and attended and hosted many dinner and cocktail parties. On September 29, 1965, she gave birth to her fifth child, so needless to say, she was a remarkably busy, full time homemaker and mother! She was a very nurturing and loving mother, always involved with our extracurricular activities, special performances, etc. She also volunteered at our schools, the Girl Scouts and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. How she managed to get everyone to and from their sports practice’s games, dance lessons, recitals, church, etc., all while managing the household without all the modern conveniences, along with everything else still amazes us to this day! She was always transporting us to and from friends’ houses, the skating rink, the movies, the pool at the country club and many shopping trips to Pensacola. As we got older, she started working full time as the office manager and receptionist in our father’s Chiropractic Practice. We do not recall her ever being unavailable or sick. We will forever appreciate all she sacrificed for her family! In the mid 70’s, as a newly, single parent, she and her two youngest children moved to Montgomery, Alabama. She retired from Morrison’s Cafeteria after 20 years and then relocated to Pensacola to enjoy her golden years. She lived with her oldest daughter and family for over 20 years. She was fun, had a great laugh and we always looked forward to Christmas Eve where we ALL would gather. She loved most genres of music and she loved, loved, loved to dance! She enjoyed spending time with her family and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren, going to thrift and antique stores, attending concerts, musicals and plays, reading, crossword puzzles and later word searches and all things Betty Boop. In 2016, she moved into the Solaris Healthcare Nursing Home. We deeply appreciate all the daily and medical care and attention she received from each member of the staff. Some described her as “feisty Dixie” and that she wanted to be as independent as possible. We especially appreciate EVERY NURSE and CNA that took excellent and compassionate care of our mother during her last weeks, and especially those on duty the last few days and hours and how they treated the family during our final visits with our mother. It warmed my heart to see various CAN’s and nurses come and say their goodbyes when they heard of her status. May God Bless and keep them all safe! She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepparents Hattie Oliphant and James Asel and sister Dorothy Oliphant McGeachy, (Park) Jacksonville, FL. She is survived by her children: Lisa Hagan, (Joseph), Robin Norris, (David), Harlon Hood, Steward Hood, (Christie), “inherited daughter” Suzanne Spence, (Michael), all of Pensacola and Leslie Moore, (Robert), of Georgia, Grandchildren; Brian Hagan, Johanna Hagan-Jordan, Eric and Valerie Norris, of Pensacola and Robby Moore, (Rebecca), and Matthew Moore of St. Mary’s, Georgia and James Drennan of Van Buren, Missouri, Step grandchildren; Greg Hagan, Pensacola and Gail Hagan-Gutenmann, (Rick), of Las Vegas, “inherited grandchildren” Kathryn and Linzy Spence of Pensacola. Great grandchildren; Thomas and Lucas Jordan of Pensacola, Ryleigh, and Elijah Moore of Georgia. Step great grandson, Anderson Bowling of Nevada. Niece and nephew, Dean McGeachy-Fuller, (Tim) of Newsoms, Virginia and Collis McGeachy, (Debbie) of Jacksonville, Florida. A private family service will be held at Family-Funeral & Cremation 5627 N. Davis Hwy Pensacola, FL. 32503 on Friday, March 19, 2021 at 9:00 AM Interment will follow at Serenity Gardens in Milton, Florida.
