CDR Russell Ernest Hurd, USN (Ret), 92, passed away due to complications of COVID-19 on February 2, 2021. He was the son of Ernest Duke Hurd and Frances Mae Russell. He is survived by his sons, Gregory A. Hurd and Scott E. Hurd; daughter, Cyndee H. Julian; grandchildren, Trevor Hurd, Devin Hurd, Kate Julian, Alex Julian, Julia Hurd, and Kristina Hurd and two great granddaughters, Hayden and Isla Julian. Our Dad was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, grew up in Southern California and traveled the world extensively. He had a remarkable passion and positivity for life, and inspired and encouraged everyone he met. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and an Advanced Master’s degree from University of Michigan. He first started seeing the world in the Navy as a Naval Aviator after attending flight school in Pensacola FL in 1949. As a family, we lived around the US and in Europe, and Dad retired to Pensacola Beach. FL in 1975 where he reactivated his interest in construction and engineering projects. In addition, he did volunteer work at local prisons, but his true passion was supporting other AA members in their spiritual journey to recovery. Throughout his long retirement, he bicycled and traveled the world including over 130 Road Scholar international trips and cycling on six continents. His sense of humor and his positive outlook on life will be a lasting legacy for all of us. A celebration of life is being planned for later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alcoholics Anonymous.
