Obituary of karl thomas kurz
Karl “Tom” Kurz passed away peacefully at Covenant Care Hospice April 10, 2020 after a long struggle with Parkinson Disease.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years Judy; son, Scot Kurz, Detroit, MI; daughters, Kristen Gurka (Steve), Scottsdale, AZ and Stephanie–Wilson Welhouse (Matt) Green Bay, WI and his granddaughter, Katie Kurz Detroit, MI.
He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Marcela Kurz; his sisters, Linda Martin and Carole Stevenson; his brother, Steve Kurz; his stepson, Steven Charles Wilson and his brothers-in-law, Tom Martin and Reg Stevenson.
Tom was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, graduated from GMI (now Kettering University) with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his career with General Motors, he spent many years overseas; London, England;Caracas, Venezuela; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Buenos Aires, Argentina and Mexico City, Mexico. While in Mexico City, he earned his pilot license, a dream he chased since he was young. He also began his “acting career” with the English speaking amateur theater in Mexico City, acting in the lead role of Oscar in the “Odd Couple”, the Rainmaker in “The Rainmaker”, Jonathan in Arsenic & Old Lace and played Gooper in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”.
After spending over 20 years overseas, he returned to Detroit as Director of Engineering in the CPC Division of GM. After 33 years with GM, he took early retirement and went to work as Vice President of Engineering at Cruisers, Inc.in Green Bay, Wisconsin (he was an avid GB Packer fan). He retired to Navarre, Florida in 2000 and resided there until his death. He claimed that living at Hidden Creek was the longest he had lived in one place his entire life.
He was an enthusiastic golfer, boater, traveler, skier, pilot and loved hanging out with his friends at the golf club. He had a wonderful sense of humor and lived life to the fullest.
His family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers of Covenant Care Hospice for all they did for him during this difficult time.
A Celebration of Life will be held later in the year.
