Obituary of Michael Omar Portillo

Michael Omar Portillo, age 26, died unexpectedly on June 29, 2017 from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Mike sadly leaves behind the love of his life, his wife, Alexa; his parents, Omar & Liliana Portillo; brother, Christopher Portillo and parents-in-law, Kevin & Margaret Dubois and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins. Mike was born in Miami, Florida on June 26, 1991. At the age of 13, the Portillo family relocated to the Panhandle of Northwest Florida. Mike is a graduate of Gulf Breeze High School, Class of 2009. Upon graduation, Mike pursued an early career off shore spending five years as an able-bodied seaman. Mike was a devoted husband, son, brother, son-in-law and friend. Mike valued his family with utmost importance and believed they should always come first. While working offshore, Mike’s heart could not bare the time spent away from his love, Alexa. Soon after their engagement in 2015, Mike chose to find permanent employment in Pensacola, allowing him to spend each day forward, living life with Alexa. The couple recently celebrated their first wedding anniversary, creating life long memories while traveling aboard a cruise ship. Mike worked hard at every task he pursued. When Mike made the decision to find work in Pensacola, he quickly earned his CDL license as an employee at the Lewis Bear Co. later working as a distributor at Ben E. Keith. Mike was also a valuable member of the cook team at Cordova Crawfish Co. where he could be seen working countless hours, always wearing a smile. In his spare time, Mike enjoyed his hobby as a self-taught carpenter. Mike and Alexa loved working together on projects, where Mike would build whatever Alexa designed. The collaborated hobby resembled how the duo lived life. The two would effortlessly find ways to relish spending time together. Their home is a reflection of the joyous time spent together. From handcrafted furniture pieces, to wall hangings, to the numerous photos of the couple scattered about table tops and walls. As you enter the home, the warmth of love and affection is present and can be felt heavy in the air. Just over one week prior to Mike’s untimely death, Alexa posted a picture to one of her social media accounts. The image, which portrayed the couples most recent woodworking project, where Alexa would credit Mike by saying, “I really doubt my husband envisioned all the home projects that would be in his future when he married me, but I’m so thankful. He’s always up for whatever DIY mayhem I have up my sleeve. I’m so appreciative he makes all my visions come to life, another job well done, babe”. Thank you to everyone who has reached out during this tragic time for our family. Your love and support is greatly appreciated. The loss of Mike will leave an irreplaceable void in our lives. Although a life taken from us way to soon, we are forever grateful to have been part of his journey while here on earth. We love you Mike, and you will never be forgotten.
