Obituary of Stephen Foster Hancy
Dr. Stephen Foster Hancy, Jr. was called home to his eternal rest with the Lord on Tuesday, February 13,
2024.
Stephen, known by friends and family as Steve, was born to Eva Martena McKim & Stephen Foster
Hancy in St. Petersburg, Florida on November 4, 1942. Steve’s father was killed the following year while
serving as a Lieutenant Colonel with the Army Air Forces, 97th Bomber Group, in Tunisia during World
War II. Raised by a devoted single mother, lifelong educator and an avid sailor and the longest
continuous member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.
It was during his childhood that Steve first heard the call of deep waters and the outdoors that would
lead him toward a life filled with adventure, family and friends.
Steve earned a scholarship to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where he completed his
undergraduate degree in 2 years. He was accepted to and entered the Emory University School of
Dentistry, from which he graduated in 1966. Upon graduation, Steve was commissioned an officer in the
United States Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Upon honorable completion of his military
service, he returned to Emory where he completed his residency in oral surgery while also teaching at
the School of Dentistry.
Steve moved to Pensacola in 1977, and back to the Gulf waters of his childhood, where he started an
oral surgery practice with Dr. David Rawson and later Dr. Mark Braxton. Steve became deeply involved
in his Pensacola community, including the Pensacola Ski Club where he would meet his future wife, Ann,
on a ski trip to Switzerland.
Ann and Steve would raise two boys in Gulf Breeze and instill them with the same legacy of achievement
and adventure that had marked Steve’s life. Stephen Foster Hancy, III, a pilot, and Dr. Geoffrey Lewis
Hancy, an Orthopedic Surgeon, can both tie a line, set a trap, sail a boat or pilot a plane because of the
lessons they learned from their father.
Steve would practice as an oral surgeon for more than 13 years before retiring to involve his family more
deeply in all of his favorite passions and pursuits including: skiing, sailing, boating, adventure, travel,
dancing, reading and socializing with an extended network of close friends.
Steve was involved in numerous community organizations including the Pensacola Yacht Club, Elks
Lodge, and Pensacola Beach Yacht Club, to name a few.
He is survived by his sons Stephen and Geoffrey and daughters-in-law Julie and Anna as well as
grandchildren Stephen Foster Hancy, IV, Anniston Deer Hancy, Henley Prim Hancy, Brooks McKim Hancy,
Lydia Ann Hancy and Sophie Mei Hancy.
A visitation and celebration of Steve’s life will take place Thursday, February 22 at noon at Gulf Breeze
United Methodist Church with a funeral to follow at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Steve’s name to be made to Feeding the Gulf Coast or
Lifeline Children’s Services.
