Celebrating the Life of

Dorothy Jean Akers

July 8, 1937-September 14, 2024

On September 14, 2024, Dorothy Jean Akers (Dot, Dottie), age 87, was gently escorted into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who she served faithfully all her life.

Born on July 8,1937 in Pulaski, VA, her remarkable journey began under challenging circumstances as she was raised as a young girl in a foster home after being born to Annie Lee Tibbs.  Yet through it all, Dot blossomed into a beacon of love and resilience. Her heart found its perfect match in Clayton Edsel Akers when she married the love of her life in 1957. They were happily married for 60 years as they navigated the ups and downs of military life together before his passing in 2018; she was a devoted military wife as he served 21 years active duty and 23 years civil service for the U.S. Navy.  Around 1968 they were stationed in Key West, FL, where they stayed. Dot was passionate for her family, devoted to her 4 boys, Timothy, Brian, Jeffrey and Daryl and also helped raise Candy and Scott for a some time, her granddaughter and grandson.  She was faithful to her church, Big Coppit First Baptist Church for over 30 years where she served in Childrens Sunday school, volunteered to clean, and yearly helped with VBS (Vacation Bible School).  As a military wife she volunteered for 18 years for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society at the Thrift Shop on the military base in Key West, FL serving as Thrift Shop Chairman for 15 years (receiving the Meritorious Service Award in 2005 from Retired Admiral Charles S. Abbot) focusing always on helping military families in the way she knew best.

Shortly after the passing of her husband, Dot found herself embarking on a new chapter, as she relocated to Pensacola, FL to live with her son Jeff and his wife Gloria, where many new memories were created, Amidst this fresh start, it was Precious-her loyal companion dog - who became a steadfast shadow in her life.

Though we grieve our loss on this earth, we rejoice in her homecoming in Heaven, leaving us with many beautiful memories of her life that we will cherish all the days of our lives.
