Obituary of Martha Compton James
Mrs. Martha Ola James (Compton) age 93 of Pensacola, Florida, passed away peacefully in the presence of her son and daughter on October 3, 2024.
She was born on March 2,1931 in Powder Springs, Georgia, the daughter of the late Thomas (Tommy) N. Compton and Zora O. Hill. A graduate of Austell High Class of 1948, Martha attended the University of Georgia and returned to her hometown to teach typing at Powder Springs School. Soon after marrying in 1951, she became a long-term resident of Atlanta.
Her professional career spanned many years, first serving as the Financial Secretary at Wieuca Road Baptist Church until her retirement in 1996. Second, she embarked on a new career excelling as a top salesperson at the Kohl’s Smyrna location and was honored in Wisconsin at Kohl’s Corporate Head Quarters in recognition for her exemplary service to the company. After residing in Smyrna, Georgia for many years, Martha moved to Pensacola Beach, Florida enjoying the “Salt Life.” She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pensacola. Her family knew her as “Marty” and “Nana”, but friends and acquaintances knew her as a little spitfire inwardly, and as a sassy diva fashionista outwardly!
She is survived by her three children, daughters, Sandra J. Jacob, husband Bernard Jacob of Ponte Vedra, Florida; Linda C. James of Summerville, Georgia; son, Mark C. James, wife Belinda S. James, of Gulf Breeze, Florida; two sisters, Peggy O. Compton, of Powder Springs, Georgia; Barbara C. Waldrop, husband Sherman Waldrop, of Powder Springs, Georgia; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, several cousins and other family members.
