Obituary of Johnny Culpepper
Johnny Culpepper, a resident of Dothan died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on November 4, 2024. He was 80.
Johnny was born in Dothan, Alabama on October 7, 1944 to John Thurman and Johnnie Mae Culpepper. He grew up in Napier Field and was a 1963 graduate of Dothan High School. He attended the University of Alabama where he was part of the 1963 Alabama Crimson Tide football team as a defensive back #45. He also attended Troy University Dothan later in life.
He married Linda Dell Pollan in 1964 and they began their life together with Johnny’s entrepreneurial spirit. They owned several automobile dealerships, franchises and rental agencies, a radio station and eventually got into the video rental distribution business prior to retirement. Johnny was introduced to aeronautics early in life by his father where he obtained his pilot’s license prior to his driver’s license. He enjoyed playing golf, spending time with family and friends and serving the Press Thornton Future Masters golf tournament for the past 58 years alongside longtime friend the late Press Thornton.
Johnny was a member of First Presbyterian church where he served on multiple missions’ trips both stateside and abroad, served on the missions committee for several years and as a deacon for many years. He truly had a heart of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents John Thurman and Johnnie Mae Culpepper of Napier Field, wife of 41 years Linda Dell Pollan Culpepper, brother Wayne (Sandra) Culpepper, sister Martha (Joe) Jezewski, son in law Jamie Beeker and nephew Joseph Jezewski and special friends Lamar and Sybil Trammell.
He leaves behind his wife of 8 years Phyllis Dinsmore Culpepper; daughters Donna (Dan) Hardin of Bruce, MS, Heather Beeker Blue Ridge, VA, Wendy (Stan) Scurlock of Cottondale, FL, and step son Chris Dinsmore of Opelika, AL; grandchildren Carolyn (Jay) Hodge Oxford, MS, Matthew (Stephanie) Culpepper Roanoke, VA, Austin (Kyndal) Beeker Roanoke, VA, Josh Scurlock Gainesville, FL, Jeremy Scurlock Marianna, FL; great grandchildren Evelyn and Madeline Hodge Oxford, MS and Oaklynn Culpepper Roanoke, VA. He also leaves behind special friends Henry Burns and Larry Rister.
The family would like to especially thank Day Spring Hospice and their amazing staff Lynn Sawyer, Nurse Samantha and On Call Nurse Ashley along with sitter Margo Lewis. A special thank you also to Dr. James Robeson Jr. for his amazing service and care over the past several years.
Visitation will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Dothan on Thursday morning November 7 at 11:00am with services immediately following at 12 noon. Pall bearers will be Matthew Culpepper, Austin Beeker, Josh Scurlock, Jeremy Scurlock, Dan Hardin, Stan Scurlock, Jay Hodge, Chris Dinsmore and Brayden Rhodes. Honorary pall bearers will be the Seekers Sunday School class at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Culpepper to the Missions Fund of First Presbyterian Church Dothan, Al.
