Obituary of gregory dale machmiller
Gregory Dale Machmiller passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022, after a brief battle with brain cancer. Memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in Niceville, Florida, Thursday, June 2, 2022 at 2PM. Faith Temple, in Sioux Fall, SD, time TBD, and will be interred at South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD with full military honors.
Greg was born on October 14th, 1954, in SD to Betty (Gayken) and Leroy Machmiller. Greg grew up in Sioux Falls, SD, graduating from Washington High School in 1973 and attended Sioux Falls College (USF) graduating with a Bachelor of Art in History in 1977. While in College, Greg met the love of his life, Monica Brick, and even though she attended "the other university" (Augustana), he married her anyway, on September 30 1977.
Greg enlisted in the United States Army in 1977 and was initially stationed in Ft. Bragg, NC. After his assignment in Ft. Bragg, NC, he chose a hardship tour in South Korea, patrolling the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. While stationed in West Virginia, Greg and Monica gave birth to their daughter, Shannon. Greg missed home and opted for an assignment back in Sioux Falls, where they gave birth to their son, Greg (II). He was then stationed in Bemidji, MN, where he taught ROTC at Bemidji State. Following Bemidji, the Army sent him and the family to Germany. He deployed to Desert Storm with 11th Armored Calvary Regiment (ACR). Greg retired from the Army in 1995, settling back in Sioux Falls. Greg's highest awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal.
When Greg wasn't working, he loved to spend his time bowling with Monica, bowling in various leagues, a passion of his since high school. When he retired from Citibank after 20 years, he and Monica moved to Crestview, FL, to be near their two beautiful Granddaughters, Ava and Graycyn.
Greg is survived by his wife, Monica; daughter, Shannon (Larry) Heard; son, Greg (Jamie) Machmiller II; granddaughters, Ava and Gracyn; brother, Doug (Lisa) Machmiller; Fur Baby, Buddy and Grand-dog, Rosco P Coltrane; nieces, nephews and cousins as well those he called friends.
